Fifth Meditation essays In the Fifth Meditation by Rene Descartes, he makes a case for the existence of God. He goes on to give reason to prove his argument that to exist is to believe in God for with out God we would not exist. Descartes gives the analogy of a mountain and a valley, pointing out that if a person believes that a mountain exists they cannot deny the existence of a valley, as stated in this quote: From the fact that I cannot think of a mountain without a valley, it does not follow that a mountain and valley exist anywhere, but simply that a mountain and a valley, whether they exist or not, are mutually inseparable. Descartes states the argument here, But from the fact that I cannot think of God except as existing, it follows that existence is inseparable from God, and hence that he really exists. Then he goes on to explain his reasons for the existence of God, It is not that my thought makes it so, or imposes any necessity of the thing itself, namely the existence of God, which determines my thinking in this respect. For I am not free to think of God without existence. He is saying, without God he would not exist, and if he does not exist he cannot think therefore God must exist if he has the ability to think. He supports his arguments further, as we see here, Descartes gives his conclusion, it states, I have perceived that God exists, and at the same time I have understood that everything else depends on him, and that he is no deceiver; and I have drawn the conclusion that everything which I clearly and distinctly perceive is of necessity true. He is saying, first of all, that everything that he unmistakably understands is true; he clearly understands God, therefore God exists! Biography of Sarah Boone

Biography of Sarah Boone If youve ever tried to iron a shirt, you can appreciate how difficult it is to iron the sleeves. Dressmaker Sarah Boone tackled this problem and invented an improvement to the ironing board in 1892 that would make it easier to press sleeves without introducing unwanted creases. She was one of the first black women to receive a patent in the United States. Life of Sarah Boone, Inventor Sarah Boone began life as Sarah Marshall, born in 1832. In 1847, at age 15, she married freedman James Boone in New Bern, North Carolina. They moved north to New Haven, Connecticut before the ​Civil War. She worked as a dressmaker while he was a brick mason. They had eight children. She lived in New Haven for the rest of her life. She died in 1904 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery. She filed her patent July 23, 1891, listing New Haven, Connecticut  as her home. Her patent was published nine months later. There is no record found of whether her invention was produced and marketed. Sarah Boones Ironing Board Patent Boones patent was not the first for an ironing board, despite what you may see in some listings of inventors and inventions. Folding ironing board patents appeared in the 1860s. Ironing was done with irons heated on the stove or fire, using a table that was covered with a thick cloth. Often women would simply use the kitchen table, or prop a board on two chairs. Ironing would usually be done in the kitchen where the irons could be heated on the stove. Electric irons were patented in 1880 but didnt catch on until after the turn of the century. Sarah Boone patented an improvement to the ironing board (U.S. Patent #473,653) on April 26, 1892. Boones ironing board was designed to be effective in ironing the sleeves and bodies of ladies garments. Boones board was very narrow and curved, the size and fit of a sleeve common in ladies garments of that period. It was reversible, making it easy to iron both sides of a sleeve. She noted that the board could also be produced flat rather than curved, which might be better for the cut of the sleeves of mens coats. She noted that her ironing board would also be well-suited for ironing curved waist seams. Her invention would be most convenient to have for pressing sleeves even today. The typical folding ironing board for home use has a tapered end that can be useful for pressing necklines of some items, but sleeves and pant legs are always tricky. Many people simply iron them flat with a crease. If you dont want a crease, you have to avoid ironing over the folded edge. Finding storage for a home ironing board can be a challenge when you live in a small space, Compact ironing boards are one solution that is easier to put into a cupboard. Parenting styles Essay Child development has been a topic of interest of most developmental psychologists, especially in terms of the relationship between a parent and a child (Eisenberg et al. , 2009). There has been considerable effort in establishing a cause-and-effect relationship between a particular approach that a parent employs and the resulting behavior in a child. Unfortunately, the precise connection has been quite elusive, as there are yet a number of factors that could influence the impact of a parental action towards a child. There are also other external factors that may modify the impact of a specific parental action, thus generating a modified response in a child (Jackson et al. , 2008). Another complicating factor to consider in this type of analysis is the observation that children show varied responses to a specific parental approach despite the utmost similarity in the characteristics of the child’s immediate environment. There are also twin studies that depict variations in the personalities of children despite their growth and development in the same location. One widely recognized association between parenting styles and the impact on children is that established by Baumrind (1967). In her study involving approximately 100 children who were at their pre-school age, four dimensions were identified to be strongly associated with parenting. Among these were the type of strategy that was employed in instilling discipline in a child, the degree and method of providing care and warmth to a child, the mode of communicating to a child and the amount of maturity of a parent towards his child. These dimensions could thus characterize a specific parenting style, of which could be easily identifiable among parents. This essay will present the four parenting styles that were described by Baumrind (1967), as well as analyze the impact of each style on the general well being of the child. The four styles of parenting according to Baumrind (1967) The term parenting pertains to a complex action that is strongly associated with a particular behavior that influences a child’s growth and development. Since children are too young and immature to understand the principles and facts of life, parents thus take responsibility of teaching their children and in most instances neglect to explain every situation that comes by their children’s way. The simplest and effective method for a parent to prevent their children from experiencing any harm is to provide rules that would ultimately control their actions towards getting into trouble. Parenting is also related to two essential elements, namely responsiveness and capacity to demand. Parental responsiveness pertains to the degree to which a parent supports individuality and assertion on the part of the child. This element thus allows a child to perform actions that he wants to engage in, as long as these are still acceptable and proper. On the other hand, a parent’s capacity to demand pertains to the claim made on a child in order for this young individual to be integrated into the family. In addition, a parent’s level of demand is also associated with a parent being capable of confronting a child when he disobeys the established rules of the family. Authoritarian style of parenting. This parental approach is generally characterized by establishing rules in the household, of which the children are expected to follow. In any case that these rules are not followed, the parent then imposes a punishment on the child. One unique feature of this parenting style is that most parents do not provide any opportunity to explain to their children when a certain rule has been established in the home (Williams et al. , 2009). The child, on the other end, is thus unaware of the principle behind each rule, yet he would follow the rules in order to avoid getting any punishment from his parent. A strong correlation with the authoritarian style is the quality of having high standards, as well as great expectations on the part of the parent. It is quite unfortunate to see that despite the strict rules in the home, an authoritarian parent does not respond to the inquiries of the child. In addition, authoritarian parents are generally focused on the concepts of obedience within the family, as well as maintenance of the status of this social unit. In addition, the authoritative approach also employs clear and distinct rules that would result in an acceptable standard to both the parents and the children themselves. Permissive approach to parenting. Permissive parenting generally involves an indulgent approach to children, wherein only a few expectations are expected of the children. In addition, permissive parents seldom punish their children because there are no rules to follow at home. The parents also do not demand any signs of maturity, as well as self-control, from their children. In terms of comparing the predominant feature in permissive parenting, the parents are described to be more interactive and responsive, than the feature of being demanding of their children. Using this approach, the children thus sense a nurturing effect from their parents, as they are given the opportunity to communicate to their parents. It is also possible that children feel that their permissive parent is more of a friend than a strict parent. The uninvolved style of parenting. The uninvolved parent is often associated with having only a few expectations, as well as a low degree of responsiveness to their children. In this parenting approach, there is seldom any interaction between the parent and the children. However, it should be understood that despite the silence between the two parties, the basic needs of the child are still met, although the parent maintains a detached personality towards the child. Children of authoritative parents, on the other hand, are usually happy, as well as highly capable of producing their expected results. In addition, these children often result in successful lives during their adult year. Children of permissive parents are often unhappy, despite the freedom to perform any activity of their choosing. It has been reported that children of permissive parents are more likely to encounter problems due to illegal activities, as well as result in poor academic performance. The uninvolved approach in parenting generally results in the lowest quality of childhood, wherein children have been found to lose any sense of self-control. One Day Ill Meet Someone :: Personal Narrative Writing

All right. I'm bitter. I seem to always be in this state lately, but never more so than after the weekend I've just had. I spent about half a year thinking that I was in love with one of my closest friends, and in the space of about ten minutes he completely obliterated any respect I had for him, while destroying my own self-image in the process. So I've been friends with this guy for about four years now, and we've been pretty decent friends for most of that time. But in the past year or so, we have gotten much closer. About six months ago, I suddenly had the revelation that I was in love with him. And it was perfect, I thought, because we were so close, and I respected him so much, and we got along so well together, blah blah blah. It didn't matter that he is kinda fat, or not very good looking, or that he has no sense of humor, or that most of my friends don't like him. All that mattered was I knew that deep down he is a good person with a good heart, not to mention smart, honest, and responsible, all qualities I admire in a man. Not to mention the fact that I totally believe that friendships make a good foundation for a relationship, and that my ex-boyfriend was and is still one of my closest friends. So my feelings for this guy grew stronger while getting to know him better over the past year. Although none of my friends thought he was good enough for me (even the ones who are also friends with him), I would defend him, even when he was rude or acted like a jerk, because I knew he really was a good person at heart. Finally, after many months of not getting any response from him and wondering if I should tell him how I felt, I decided it was time to get over him. I was sick of waiting for him to wake up and see me, and I was too scared to say anything about how I felt. I went out with another guy, but it didn't work out and then I realized that I was never going to let go of him until I had some sort of closure, however lame that sounds. Late one night after a disastrous date, I saw him online and IM'ed him.

Chinese Philosophy and Poetry Essay

One of the most prevalent beliefs of the Chinese philosophies is that men are born good. People are naturally good unless they fail to develop their feelings and senses. Confucianism teaches that a lack of knowledge can be the cause to evil. In Poem 238, a woman named Chiang Yuan gave birth to the human race by sacrificing and praying to God. She bore her child easily because she sought after blessings from God. Confucianism teaches that good things will come to those who are good and do good. A. N. Whitehead’s quotation of a Cambridge vicar says, â€Å"For well-conducted people, life presents no problems.† The mother in the poem seemed to be well-conducted and therefore she was blessed with a painless, easy childbirth. It says that God gave her ease and blessed her because he was pleased with the sacrifice and prayer. The poem paints a picture of how even the animals protected the baby. This might be because of their view of being born flawless and without evil. This baby was protected by the animals because there was no evil in him. Hou Chi, the baby boy, grew up to be a wise man and continued to be blessed and prospered through his crops and farming. He would be considered to be the â€Å"superior man† because of his moral wisdom and his ability to tell right from wrong. Because he lived by his mother’s example and gave sacrifices to God, good things came to him. The power of moral example is strongly shown here. His mother first taught him the importance of sacrifice and prayer and through that, he learned to do the same and show respect and fear God. Another philosophy is the importance of filial piety and reverence. Parents are revered because they give life to their children and sacrifice much for them. The child brought honor to his mother by keeping her religious traditions. God was pleased by his actions and blessed him his entire life. This is a very ideal form of what a man can be like, but it is very unrealistic. If man were actually born good, then evil would not have such a major influence and affect everyday lives.

The monster, as the Professor realised before he pursued the project, has the potential inside him to be so overwhelmingly good, almost angelic, which is shown through the natural instinct to help the family he stays with, but the monster also possesses the potential to take up mostly evil actions, for example, when he murders young Willy as revenge for Frankenstein making him the way he did and creating how he is to live his as an outsider. The monster has no identity; he is precariously composed of disfigured limbs and organs; no part of the body belongs to him as a person- all the personalities are mingled and therefore, Frankenstein’s monster cannot be described as an individual mind or body. As a result of being made up of so many different body parts- intelligent, criminal, thief- he has many different interchangeable personalities, which all come as natural to him. The monster is ugly, there’s no other word for it; his appearance is horrific, people hide and cringe at the sight of it, but there is the possibility for the monster to be loved by the human race. This is proven in the circumstances wherein the blind man makes friends with the monster, and therefore appearance does not matter, only the person inside; the monster can be loved although on the outside he is ugly, different and unnatural. It is partly the monster’s fault that he ends up being hated by everyone, although Frankenstein holds most of the blame. He went against the Professor’s will through using his notes and didn’t consider the dangerous consequences that come of meddling with God and nature. He made a creature that had no say in how he was created before he was brought to life, it was brought into the world without consent and the monster cannot retaliate or control the consequences. He has to live a life of rejection as a result of his uncontrollable appearance, the main reason of hatred for him. The monster, often unintentionally for these were his natural reactions; part of his personality, inflicts the hatred upon himself. He undergoes deeds considered as demonic, but as revenge, a natural instinct. There are many moral issues throughout the story, the strongest being that, all the innocent people are the ones who die, they are conquered by evil. Elizabeth, Justine and Willy are all murdered unjustly, whereas the monster lives for longer and provokes the murders. Another is that, Captain Walton, although having an obsession for reaching the North Pole, abandons his voyage after hearing Frankenstein’s story. Religion plays a large part in Frankenstein, God is referred to several times, for example, when Victor has an argument at university, he is said to be meddling with God and nature through the experiment. Also religion is represented when the monster is thought to be dead and rises in the chains to symbolise the crucifixion of Jesus. Here is a symbolic reading at Victor’s death, â€Å"God judges everything, good and bad, but also creates evil beings.† The whole film was quite confusing and the cyclical narrative at the beginning enhanced this so I was often left pondering over what was happening. I thought that, although there were many changes to the original storyline, for example, when Elizabeth is brought back to life in the film and not in the book, this version was a suitable adaptation and flowed very well, enhanced by the excellent special effects.

The connection he feels with the school are solely the superficial feautures of routine and uniform. The poet makes it clear from the beginning how he feels alienated from the school that his mother insists on him going to, after being caught up in the superficial aspects of the school impressed by the uniform of her employers sons. The only connection he feels is through the superficial features of uniform and routine. At the very start the poet makes clear the personas alienation as it is his mothers desire to the school taken in by the same superficial features, impressed by the uniform of her employers sons. Sckrzynecki makes clear the personas lack of connection from the very beginning. The poet uses impersonal, voices at bus-stops, litanies and hymns, to show emphasis on the distance the persona feels between himself and the school. This delineation is furthered through the technique of a simile, like a foreign tourist, accentuating not only his sense of exclusion, but also his cultural differences. This is additionally emphasised by the insecurty created by the diction uncertain causing the reader to empathise with the alienation experienced by the persona. The poet emphasises this point through the ominous tone of the darkness around me, experienced by the persona. The tone amplifies the lack of affiliation the persona feels with the school. The poet changes the tone of the poem by implementing humour when the persona confuses the school motto with a bar of soap, to further highlight the personas disassociation. he motto becomes ironic, as it is not until school that he succeeds. The irony symbolises the fact that the persona was unable to achieve a sense of belonging at the school and in hand was unable to achieve a sense of purpose and fulfilment at the school. Sckrzyneckis postcard is a prime example of how to belong to something you must first understand it. The poem explores the personas trapped feeling, caught between his polish heritag e and Australian upbringing. The poem explores the sense of the persona never truly understanding his background so feeling that he could never truly belong in contrast to st Patricks college where the main persona felt disconnected even once having a good understanding into that certain culture. The persona feels no affiliation claiming Warsaw, old town i never knew. This distances himself from his heritage. The defintive diction of never only amplifies his alienation from his past culture. The poet uses the rhetorical question exclaiming in a tone of exasperation whats my choice to be? to demonstrate the inner battle within the persona as he tries to resolve the struggle between his two cultures. The persona thus reflects how a lack of belonging can cause a sense of both confusion and sensation of being lost. The inecsapabilityof the personas dilemma is emphasised throught the again negative diction of haunts. The egative connotation of the word serves to amplify the need to reconcile the two cultures. This id ea is accentuated in the definitive diction of the final line we will meet again leaving the reader unsure as to whether or not the persona will ever sold his troubling dilemma. There are many ways in which a piece of literature can be read and interpreted the short story School by Peter Cowan is one that incorporates reading practices and assumptions. School shows the personas contrasting situation as he feels like he competely belongs in one environment and in another completely on the outside. Red pencil corrections, and they were nothing, related to nothing he knew the people and the town and when he did something they listened and anwered these two statements taken from two conflicting times in the short story show well the different situation the persona finds himself in. The beginning of the story shows great relation to Schryzneckis St patricks College as he seems to just be doing the minmum required from him but never really feeling attached to his school. The story also shares similarities to theme of Post card as both personas desire to be somewhere, one of the situations to feel more connected to thier heritage and in the other to be in a place were they feel more comfortable and welcomed. The above texts depict a range of characters in very different situations but at the same time all experiencing a sense of belonging in one way or another. Althought the ways in which the characters experience belonging is very different, all the texts illustrate the importance of having an understanding into the cultural group they find themselves in for them to have a better chance of belonging. Both Schyzneckis poems show different situations but a similar outcome as in both the persona never feels like he truly belongs. Peter Cowans Short story demonstrates how some people are suited to some environments and will never be suited to others.

Furthermore, I'll describe what makes the Ivy League unique, explain how to find the Ivy League school that's right for you, and give you advice on how to decide whether you should pursue an Ivy League education. What Is the Ivy League? The Ivy League is the term used to refer to the eight schools that make up the Ivy League athletic conference. Below is the complete Ivy League schools list in alphabetical order: Brown University Columbia University Cornell University Dartmouth College Harvard University Princeton University University of Pennsylvania Yale University Ivy League schools are all extremely selective private colleges in the Northeast. Also, the Ivy League is the onlyNCAA Division I athletic conference that doesn’t award athletic scholarships. The term Ivy League has become synonymous with extremely prestigious, highly selective colleges. For this reason, many people incorrectly label other prestigious private colleges, such as MIT and Stanford, as Ivy League schools. (Justin Kern/Flickr) How I Ranked the Ivy League Colleges It’s difficult to rank the Ivy League colleges against one another because they’re all outstanding schools.There's really no consensus about which Ivy League school is the best, and each ranking list seems to rank the Ivies differently. To determine my Ivy League rankings, I looked at the ranking lists onUS News, Forbes, and Niche. Each list differed from the others, so thoughthere’s no consensus about how to rank Ivy League schools, there is general agreement that all Ivy League schools are among the best colleges in the country.I averaged these three rankings but counted the US News rankings twice, since this list isthe most prestigious and most commonly cited of all college ranking lists. I think these three lists complement each other well because they emphasize different aspects of colleges that contribute to overall school quality. Of these lists,US Newsmost strongly emphasizes the academic reputations of colleges. The academic reputation of a school iswhat education experts think of the academics at a particular college. US News gives a peer assessment survey to university presidents, provosts, and deans of admissions to help rate academic quality. It also surveys high school counselors across the US. The Forbes list most heavily emphasizes student outcomes, factoring inalumni salaries, the amount of debt students have upon graduating, student loan default rate, and even prestigious professional accomplishments from alumni, such as winning an Oscar or Nobel Prize. Finally, the Niche list most heavily emphasizes quality of life. While Niche also incorporates academic reputation and measurements of student outcomes into its rankings, unlike the other two lists, Niche takes into account the quality of campus housing, athletics, technology, the party scene, and diversity. I created a table with each school's ranking, location, and undergraduate enrollment.The average ranking is based on counting the school's US News ranking twice.You can click on each school's link to see the average high school GPA of admitted applicants, its standardized test scores, and its acceptance rate. Note thatUS News separates colleges into four categories(National Universities, National Liberal Arts Colleges, Regional Universities, and Regional Colleges) for its ranking lists. All the Ivy League colleges are considered National Universities,so each school's ranking is being compared with those of all other colleges in the National Universities category. What Can You Determine From These Ivy League Rankings? As you probably know, Ivy League colleges have extremely good reputations.All Ivies are ranked in the top 16 National Universities by US News.In terms of numerical rankings, there isn't much distinction among Ivy League schools, but there are some notable differences. In most Ivy League rankings, Princeton, Harvard, and Yale are at the top.They're the topIvy League schools and some of the very bestcolleges in the US. They're comparable to top-tier non-Ivy League schools such as Stanford and MIT.There's probably some debate about which schools compose the next tier of Ivy League schools, but, based on my rankings, I would put Columbia, Penn, and Brown in the second tier.Their academic reputations aren't quite as established as those of the first-tier schools, and as a whole they're slightly less selective. Comparable non-Ivy League schools include Duke and Caltech. The finaltier of Ivy League schools would be Dartmouth and Cornell.Cornell has the highest acceptance rate of all Ivy League institutions (but it still only admits 13% of its applicants). Non-Ivy League schools that are comparable to Dartmouth and Cornell in terms of quality include Northwestern and Vanderbilt. Remember that rankings are subjective, but they can reveal how colleges are viewed by employers, graduate schools, and the general public.Even though Harvard and Cornell are both incredibly prestigious schools where you can receive a world-class education and become part of a successful alumni network, the general consensus is that Harvard is the better school. Matt Damon went to Harvard, but he left a little early to do the acting thing. How to Decide Which Ivy League School Is Right for You Many of the Ivy League schools are extremely similar. They’re private schools of similar sizes with excellent academic reputations. In addition, they are all located in the same region of the US, they all have large endowments, and they all tend to offer generous financial aid. If you’re interested in attending an Ivy, you’ll have to do extensive research to determine which Ivy League school is right for you.You can use college finders, search websites, guidebooks, and other ranking lists to try to find the best Ivy for you. Here are four factors to keep in mind as you research the Ivy League: #1: Setting One of the biggest differences between Ivy League schools is their settings.Figure out whether you want to go to school in an urban, suburban, or ruralarea.The urban Ivy League schools include Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Brown, and the University of Pennsylvania. However, they’re all in cities of very different types and sizes. In terms of urban environments, Columbia is in New York City- the most densely populated city in the US- while UPenn is situated in Philadelphia, another large city. By contrast, Brown is in the small city of Providence, Rhode Island, offering a much more subdued environment. Similarly, Harvard is in a college town called Cambridge, which is located just outside of Boston. And Yale is located in New Haven, Connecticut, which has a population of just 130,000 compared with the roughly 8.4 million people in NYC. Princeton is the only Ivy League school in a suburban setting.It's more self-contained and the surrounding area is quieter than those of other Ivies. Naturally, there are far fewer entertainment options and cultural attractions than you would find in a large city (though more than you'd find in a rural area). Princeton is only an hour from Philadelphia and an hour and a half from NYC. Cornell and Dartmouth offer students a rural environment,where students are surrounded by nature and there's not much going on in the town unrelated to the college. Rural colleges tend to provide more of a community atmosphere, but there are usually fewer jobs and internships in the vicinity. A student who'd really enjoy being in the urban environment of Columbia might not enjoy the rural setting of Dartmouth, and vice versa. Be sure to think deeply about which type of setting you'd feel most comfortable in. #2: Academic Programs, Majors, and Requirements While all Ivy League schools are strong in the humanities, social sciences, and STEM, each offers different programs, general education requirements, majors, and concentrations. For example, Cornell is the only Ivy to offer a business management program with a focus on hospitality through its School of Hotel Administration. Meanwhile, Penn is home toone of the most prestigious business schools in the US and offers a number of undergraduate business majors that aren’t available at other Ivies. Lastly, Columbia has extensive general education requirements in its Core Curriculum, whereas Brown has very few. If you have an intended major or area of study, compare the majors and course offerings at the different Ivies to ensure that you’ll be able to pursue your academic interests. #3: Size The size of the school is a factor to consider as well.While most Ivy League schools are a similar size, there aresome differences to be aware of. If you're deciding between Cornell and Dartmouth, for instance, keep in mind that Cornell's undergraduate enrollment is about three times the size of Dartmouth's. While some students prefer a larger, more vibrant atmosphere, others would enjoy a smaller, more tight-knit community. #4: Campus Culture Finally,consider the campus culture of each school. DifferentIvy League schools have different reputations in regard to the types of students they attract and admit. Princeton students are often viewed as more preppy, for example, whereas Brown students are perceived as more progressive. Some stereotypes might be more accurate than others.
